How to Brew with an AeroPress

The AeroPress combines a short steep with gentle pressure to make a smooth, clean cup in about two minutes. It's small, nearly unbreakable and easy to clean, which makes it a favorite at home and on the road.

Makes 1 mug (8 oz)

The basics

  • Coffee15 g (about 3 tbsp)
  • Water240 g (8 oz), filtered
  • Ratio1:16
  • GrindMedium-fine, like table salt
  • Temperature195°F (90°C)
  • Time2:00

You'll need

  • AeroPress
  • AeroPress paper filter
  • Kettle
  • Burr grinder
  • Kitchen scale
  • Sturdy mug

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Heat your water

Bring filtered water to a boil and let it cool for about a minute, to roughly 195°F.

  2. Step 2

    Grind medium-fine

Grind 15 g of beans medium-fine, about the texture of table salt.

  3. Step 3

    Rinse and set up

Put a paper filter in the cap, rinse it with hot water and twist the cap onto the chamber. Stand it on a sturdy mug.

  4. Step 4

    Add coffee and water

Add the grounds, start a timer and pour in 240 g of water.

  5. Step 5

    Stir and steep

Stir for about 10 seconds, set the plunger in just far enough to hold the water, and let it steep until the 1:30 mark.

  6. Step 6

    Press gently

Press straight down with slow, even pressure for about 30 seconds. Stop when you hear a hiss, then enjoy.

Pro-tip

Want a bigger cup? Brew with half the water, then top it up with hot water at the end, Americano style.

Freshness

Keep your beans in the sealed bag or an airtight container, away from light, heat and moisture, and out of the fridge. Grind just before you brew and finish the bag within a few weeks of opening.
