How to Brew French Press Coffee

A French press steeps the coffee right in the water and nothing filters out its natural oils, so you get a rich, full-bodied cup. It's also about as forgiving as brewing gets.

Makes 2 mugs (16 oz)

The basics

  • Coffee30 g (about 6 tbsp)
  • Water480 g (16 oz), filtered
  • Ratio1:16
  • GrindCoarse, like sea salt
  • Temperature200°F (93°C)
  • Time4:00 steep

You'll need

  • French press
  • Kettle
  • Burr grinder
  • Kitchen scale
  • Spoon
  • Timer

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Heat your water

Bring filtered water to a boil and let it rest for 30 seconds. Swirl a splash around the press to warm it, then pour it out.

  2. Step 2

    Grind coarse

Grind 30 g of beans coarse, like sea salt. Grind too fine and the plunger gets hard to push and the cup turns muddy.

  3. Step 3

    Add coffee and water

Add the grounds, start a timer and pour in all 480 g of water, making sure every bit of coffee gets wet.

  4. Step 4

    Steep for 4 minutes

Set the lid on with the plunger pulled all the way up and let it steep. At 4:00, give the crust a gentle stir so the grounds sink.

  5. Step 5

    Press slowly

Push the plunger down with steady, gentle pressure. It should take about 20 seconds.

  6. Step 6

    Pour it all out

Serve right away and pour any extra into a carafe. Coffee left sitting on the grounds keeps brewing and turns bitter.

Pro-tip

Leave the last sip in the press. The bottom of the pot is where the fine silt settles.

Freshness

Keep your beans in the sealed bag or an airtight container, away from light, heat and moisture, and out of the fridge. Grind just before you brew and finish the bag within a few weeks of opening.
